Ayato is the 3rd child and the oldest of the triplets (the others being Kanato and Laito). He is a prankster and a very narcissistic boy, always claims to be number #1 in everything. He calls Yui “Pancake,” in reference to her breast size.
He’s been raised by knowing the only rule as “never failing in order to be loved,” therefore he got used to always being perfect as that was a synonym for him to be worthy of love. The reason his mother, Cordelia the second wife, wanted Ayato to be the “best” was for her own sake and well being just to beat Beatrice, mother of Shuu and Reiji and the first wife, seeing her as a threat and competition to get Karlheinz’s, the father of the Sakamaki’s, attention.
Whenever he would’ve failed, his mom taught him that the punishment would’ve been abuse and cruelty. All of this made him into the narcissistic person he is now.
Obviously as he was only used by Cordelia to gain the attention to be noticed by her husband, he never got a sane motherly love.
He eventually grew to resent how his mom treated him, and tried to kill her once.
In truth, all of the attention he needs to have is due his deep need of love.
